My Artist Statement
The origins of S’bhekile’s career as a jewellery designer could easily be traced back to his childhood in Bergville. Growing up in a rural town surrounded by nothing but farmland presented a visual kind of educational appeal for him, one in which he questioned how things were made, how he could use his own hands to make them and what kind of a life awaited him in a beckoning urban world. “I’ve always been good with my hands and had this nagging urge to push myself to learn more, so when the time came, I knew what I had to do. Following a career in the art world was something I knew I was destined for, so I left my home town to pursue a tertiary education and career in a city with mountains of opportunity.”
With absolutely no knowledge of jewellery design, but keen to develop his eye for art and design, S’bhekile began honing his real-world metal-working skills as a first-year student in 2006 when he enrolled for a B Tech Degree in Jewellery Design and Manufacture at the Durban University of Technology. At first, it was just doing repairs for friends on campus. This was soon followed by customers from his Mayville community since there were no people doing this type of work in the township at the time. Since then I have never looked back.
We do it all
Every piece of jewellery begins with a design phase, whether that is the design of our stylish featured ranges or Sbhekile working with you to produce the custom jewellery with your vision. Everything manufactured with us has Sbhekile's personal touch, creating designs suited perfectly to you.
Everything purchased from Sbhekile Jewellers is not only designed, but also produced on site at the studio. When we say every piece of jewellery has Sbhekile's, we mean it, as every ring and necklace is physically put together by Sbhekile himself at the studio.
